I always liked how the seat belt mechanism worked, the first time I ever saw a seat belt was in my school van which had one for the front two seats, I loved playing with it, strangling someone next to me or just buckling and unbuckling it, though, never understood the importance of it.
After hearing / seeing people losing their life just because they did not wear this silly metal buckle, I understood its worth!
We compromise many things for money in our country, one such thing is safety. Most of the (basic) cars sold in developed countries come with factory fitted Airbags, ABS etc., But, It is only in India, I guess even the top end model of a car bring these as an optional fitment. Regardless, the only safety equipment which we can find across all cars in India is the Seat Belt. Perhaps, this is again the most neglected safety precaution!
When I lived in UK, I often travelled in my friend’s car, and each time I get in, I was always reminded by my friends to wear the seatbelt (I was just a co-passenger). Back there, it was an offence to travel in a car without fastening the seat belts. Later on, it just became a habit for me use seat belt irrespective of others mentioning it.
In contrast I found people mocking me here for using Seatbelt, some said I’m over cautious / showoff etc., But I just want to share that many a times, in Indian roads this seat belt has saved me from ejecting out of my seat. In most of the accidents, we see driver being thrown out, breaking the wind shield.
Apparently it doesn't cost you anything to fix it / wear it, then, why argue? Friends, If you are reading this post till now, here’s the take home message / action item. PLEASE WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT!
